How to Market Your Child Therapy Private Practice

Did you know your private practice - yes, even a practice of one - is actually running eight departments?
I see you... you may pick up your jaw now. Here are the eight: marketing, sales, delivery, customer service, operations, HR, admin, and finance.
Confession... out of all eight, marketing is my favorite. It comes most naturally to me and it happens to be the one everyone asks me about first. The answer is always clear - everyone wants more clients through the door.
So let's start here, and we'll walk through the rest over the next few weeks.
How Am I Supposed to Know This Stuff?
Here's something I wish someone had told me back in 2016, sitting between a school counseling job and an in-home clinician gig as I was accruing hours, with zero idea I'd ever run a business of my own.
And I get it! Nobody hands you that memo in grad school, and most programs still don't offer marketing courses. You just start seeing clients, and somewhere along the way you realize you're also doing marketing, and billing, and scheduling, and playing HR to yourself, all without ever being told that's what was happening.
Here's the reframe I want to offer you...
This isn't scary... it's actually kind of freeing. Once you become aware of the departments, you can stop feeling like you're "just bad at business" and start treating each piece like what it actually is - a system you can build on purpose.
This is a big piece of what I coach on inside the Latinx Practice Collective, and I'm excited to bring it here too, through a child therapist lens. That last part is super important as working with kids adds its own layer to every one of these departments.
Why Marketing Feels So Uncomfortable for So Many of Us
Many clinicians I talk to don't struggle with marketing because they don't understand it, they're just afraid of being seen.
Marketing yourself asks you to do the exact opposite of what we're trained to do. We're trained to sit back, hold space, and let the client lead. Marketing asks you to show up, say what you do, say it like you mean it, and do it over and over again.
That discomfort isn't a sign you're bad at this - it's a sign nobody ever gave you permission to think of yourself as both a clinician and a business owner at the same time.
Permission granted!
What Marketing Actually Looks Like in a Child Therapy Private Practice
Here's what marketing actually covers in a child therapy private practice, whether it's just you or you eventually bring in help:
Your website.
Does it say what you do and who you work with? And just as important, does it have what it needs on the back end? The right headings, meta description and SEO to actually help people find you in the first place?
Your Directories.
The listings and profiles that help families and other professionals find you before they ever land on your site.
Your Content.
If you like writing, do you have a blog? If you like being on camera, do you have long-form video content somewhere?
You don't need a marketing team to have a marketing department. You first need to know it exists, then you need to give it honest attention.
Not to scare you further, but do know that this is just the surface! There's a lot more nuance to each of these. You just need to create the time in your business for personal and business development.
This is exactly the kind of thing we dig into during 1:1 business consultations.
If you don't know... now you know!
The Part Nobody Wants to Hear: Consistency
Marketing only works if it's consistent. I know, that's easier said than done when you're also doing the actual clinical work, showing up for kids and families all day.
But consistent doesn't mean daily if that feels like too much. It just means picking a rhythm you can actually sustain... and keeping it. Once a week, every single week, will outperform daily for two weeks followed by two months of silence, every time.
If all you can commit to right now is one post a week, one blog a month, that's a real marketing department. Start where you actually are.
Where to Go From Here
You didn't get into this work for the marketing. But you don't have to figure it out alone either.
Here's where to go from here, wherever you're starting from:
Grab the Free Guide. The First Week Secrets Every Child Therapist Needs to Know walks through 3 things we do before a new child client ever sets foot in the office, and why they make all the difference in whether that kid wants to come back. Download it here.
Follow Along. I'm on Instagram @thekidclinician, and the mailing list is where you'll hear about everything else first, including the rest of this series.
Book a Discovery Call. If marketing, or any of the other seven departments, has you wanting to talk through your specific practice, 1:1 Expert Consultation spots are open. The call itself is free, no strings, no pressure to book anything after.
That's marketing. One department down, seven to go. See you in the next one.
